We invite you to another meeting in the COFFEE & SCIENCE series, this time on the topic of "How Františkovy Lázně became the leading cardiology spa in the Habsburg Monarchy after 1900."

Since the beginning of the 20th century, Františkovy Lázně has been purposefully promoted as "the first and most famous peat spa in the world," whose natural riches were said to guarantee the best treatment for heart disease in the entire Austro-Hungarian Empire. Behind this confident campaign were the then mayor Gustav Wiedermann (1850–1914) and the renowned Prague internist Prof. Rudolf Jaksch von Wartenhorst (1855–1947).

Historian Štěpán Karel Odstrčil from the Cheb Museum will talk not only about the spa conditions in Františkovy Lázně at the turn of the century, but will also introduce the long-neglected figure of Rudolf Jaksch, who was one of Europe's leading experts in internal medicine in his day.

Date: Wednesday, March 25, 2026, from 5:00 p.m.
Location: Cheb Museum, Valdštejn Gallery
Lecturer: Mgr. Štěpán Karel Odstrčil, historian at the Cheb Museum
