On 7-9 May 2025, we participated in the IX International Conference Congreso Iberoamericano de Peloides, held in Arnedillo, La Rioja, Spain. The Institute of Spa and Balneology was represented by researcher Ing. Pavel Kalina with a presentation focused on the history of knowledge, classification and use of peloids in the Czech Republic.

In his presentation, he presented the development of peloids in the spa industry from their beginnings in the 19th century to the current methods of their processing and application. He paid special attention to the Czech system of classification of peloids, which is extremely detailed and, thanks to the use of Latin nomenclature, facilitates international professional communication. He also presented the specifics of the preparation and distribution of peloid wraps in the Karlovy Vary Region.

The conference offered a varied professional programme focused on the therapeutic effects of peloids, their chemical composition, the protection of natural medicinal resources and innovative methods of use in balneotherapy. In addition to sharing knowledge, the event also provided opportunities to network with experts in balneology, geology and healthcare from Spain and Latin America.

Participation in this professional event supported the establishment of international contacts and the possible development of international cooperation, and at the same time strengthened the awareness of research activities in the field of balneology, which the Institute of Spa and Balneology develops within the Karlovy Vary Region. The topic of peloids is one of our key research areas and their application in therapeutic practice is one of the traditional and promising elements of spa science.
