At the Maker Faire festival in Karlovy Vary, we were again involved with our interactive stand. Within the framework of the Spa Research Centre project, this time we presented the research activities of the environmental section and prepared a programme aimed at children, parents and the curious public.
Visitors could get acquainted with two natural healing sources - mineral waters and peloids, specifically peat. For the demonstrations, we used peat from the Krsná site, which a member of our team had collected just a few days before the event. Participants were able to see the peat at different depths, touch the peat and the disintegrated sample, observe its ability to retain heat using a thermal imaging camera, or compare its absorption properties with a regular sponge.
At the mineral water habitat, the pH was tested using a natural indicator from red cabbage and there was also the popular "peat decal" - a palm print in peat, which was taken home as an unusual souvenir.
Our presentation also included a demonstration of virtual reality goggles from VR Medical, which are used in rehabilitation therapy. This feature captivated visitors of all ages and beautifully complemented the integration of traditional healing methods with modern technology.
Approximately 1500 people visited the festival and we are pleased that there was such an interest in our research activities in the field of spa and balneology. This festival was a great opportunity to show that science can be fun - and definitely for everyone!
