Research
Research focus
After the Balneological Research Institute was dissolved in 1993, the Czech Republic lacked, for more than three decades, a public research institution systematically dedicated to research in spa care and balneology. The Institute of Spa and Balneology builds on that tradition and restores coordinated research focused on the objective evaluation of the effects of spa care and natural healing resources.
Three research domains
The research of the Institute of Spa and Balneology connects medicine, the natural sciences and socio-economic disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach yields results applicable in healthcare, public administration and spa practice.
Medical research
Measures and verifies the effects of spa treatment and natural healing resources on human health.
Primarily serves spa facilities
Environmental research
Studies natural healing resources, their protection and sustainable use.
Primarily serves spa towns
Socio-economic research
Examines the role of spa care in the economy, its societal benefit and the conditions for further development.
Primarily serves public administration
Cross-cutting activities
All three domains are connected by education and knowledge and technology transfer. The institute not only creates knowledge — it systematically passes it on to practice, teaching and public policy. The goal is a transformation of spa care grounded in science, innovation and sustainability.
Research results
The point of research is a result that holds up — and that is publicly available and verifiable. The institute collects its outputs here, organised by type.
Recognition
The institute’s scientific work has international recognition — ILaB received the ESPA Innovation Award in the Spa Scientific Research category.

Research infrastructure
Quality research needs facilities. The institute is deliberately building the environment and infrastructure for scientific work — from measurement equipment to a network of sites directly in the spa towns.
