International Peloid Conference: Czech research draws attention of experts in Spain

On May 7–9, 2025, we took part in the 9th International Congreso Iberoamericano de Peloides, held in the Spanish town of Arnedillo in the La Rioja region. The Institute of Spa and Balneology was represented by researcher Ing. Pavel Kalina, who delivered an expert presentation focused on the history of research, classification, and use of peloids in Czechia.

In his presentation, he outlined the development of peloid use in spa medicine from its beginnings in the 19th century to present-day processing and application methods. He paid special attention to the Czech peloid classification system, which is exceptionally detailed and, thanks to its use of Latin nomenclature, facilitates international professional communication. He also presented the specifics of the preparation and distribution of peloid wraps in the Karlovy Vary Region.

The conference offered a rich professional program focused on the therapeutic effects of peloids, their chemical composition, the protection of natural healing resources, and innovative methods of use in balneotherapy. In addition to sharing knowledge, the event also provided opportunities to establish contacts with experts in balneology, geology, and healthcare from Spain and Latin America.

Participation in this professional event helped establish international contacts and supported the potential development of international cooperation, while also raising awareness of the research activities in balneology that the Institute of Spa and Balneology conducts within the Karlovy Vary Region. The topic of peloids is one of our key research areas, and their application in therapeutic practice remains both a traditional and forward-looking element of spa medicine.
