A team of authors consisting of Ing. Věra Marková, Ing. Alina Huseynli, MBA, and MUDr. Ladislav Špišák, CSc. has published a new scholarly article in the international peer-reviewed journal International Journal of Spa and Wellness. It addresses the effect of a week-long comprehensive spa treatment on the mental health of adult clients in Konstantinovy Lázně.

In the study, the authors examined how mood states and psychological well-being change during the first week of a spa stay. To track these changes, the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire was used, which participants completed at the beginning and after a week of their stay.

The study involved 123 people aged 32 to 86 of various sexes and genders who underwent a spa program covered by health insurance. Each of them received 15 procedures – including mineral baths with water from the Prusik spring, massages, drinking cures and physiotherapy. The treatment plan was tailored to individual needs based on a medical consultation.

The results showed significant improvements in tension, fatigue, depression, confusion and anger, along with an increase in vigour. These effects were observed across age groups and among people with different employment statuses.

This pilot study confirms the potential of even a shorter, week-long spa intervention as part of mental illness prevention.
