Linking the protection of unique ecosystems dependent on mineral waters with sustainable tourism in the Karlovy Vary Region

The MINEKOTUR project aims to comprehensively map and monitor unused mineral springs and natural gas seeps within the Karlovy Vary Region. The research will include an analysis of water quality, the chemical composition of mineral springs, microbial communities, and a botanical survey focused on the occurrence of protected and endangered plant species. Thanks to the use of modern molecular biology methods, the very first comprehensive database of these unique ecosystems will be created.

An important part of the project is the creation of a Strategy for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Sites of Unused Mineral Water and Gas Sources in the Karlovy Vary Area. Based on the data obtained, the suitability of opening each site to the public will be individually assessed. Where the protection of natural values can be ensured, specific measures will be proposed, such as visitor trails, information infrastructure, or other elements to guide visitor movement. Conversely, the most sensitive sites will be completely excluded from tourist use. Nature conservation will always take precedence over the development of visitor numbers.

At the same time, the project will contribute to the decentralization of tourism in the Karlovy Vary Region. Currently, most visitors are concentrated in the main spa centers, while many naturally interesting sites remain outside public attention. MINEKOTUR will offer new tourist destinations while establishing rules for their sustainable use so as to prevent damage to the natural environment. One source of inspiration is the Soos National Nature Reserve, which has long served as an example of the successful combination of nature conservation and visitor use.

The project will also include extensive educational and outreach activities. A publicly accessible web platform will be created, featuring a database of sites, interactive maps, and expert information. Information panels, expert and popular lectures, publications in Czech, English and German, and other materials intended for both professionals and the general public will be prepared. The aim is to raise awareness of the importance of mineral ecosystems and to promote a responsible approach to visiting them.
