With Madame Curie-Skłodowska to the Cradle of Radium: An almanac commemorates 100 years since her famous visit to Jáchymov

In June 1925, one of the most eminent scientists of all time – Marie Curie-Skłodowska – visited Jáchymov. The two-time Nobel Prize laureate finally saw in person the place with which she had been bound by a special connection since the very beginning of her scientific career. It was from Jáchymov pitchblende that the Curies isolated radium in 1898 – an element that forever changed the face of modern science and medicine.

On the occasion of the centenary of this exceptional visit, we organized an international academic conference, which gave rise to the almanac With Madame Curie-Skłodowska to the Cradle of Radium. The publication was issued by the Spolek přátel Marie Curie-Skłodowské (Society of Friends of Marie Curie-Skłodowska) in cooperation with our Institute and with the support of the Karlovy Vary Region.

Across fifty-two pages, it offers a detailed account of the visit, including a day-by-day chronology, as well as broader context: the history of Jáchymov as Europe's foremost mining town, the story of radium production and trade, the establishment of the world's oldest radon spa, and a biography of Marie Curie-Skłodowska. It also includes authentic photographs from the archive of the Musée Curie in Paris and illustrations by Miloslava Veselá.

The almanac is the result of cooperation between Czech and Polish experts and was produced as part of the Centre for Spa Research project, funded by the Operational Programme Just Transition.
